A day in Prague...

On our way home from Greece, we had a 24 hour layover in Prague. What a beautiful city! We stayed right in the heart of the old town area, with cobbled streets and beautifully painted buildings. Prague was not bombed during WWII, so the city is well preserved.

We ate dinner at Badvarka, the original Budweiser brew house and I actually drank Budweiser. It has a very different taste and look than that of the US; amber colored and great ale taste. The interior has low swooping ceilings with long wooden tables-very typical German/Austrian feel. The brew house is a local hangout and very crowded. Chris and I wanted a local flavor restaurant and we got it! We sat at a table in the very back corner where it was hot and stuffy. Allie and Tessa kept taking off layers of clothes and going outside to get a bit of fresh air. Chris and I ordered several items from the menu, hoping one of them would be palatable for our girls. No luck on that front, so Chris and I ate like kings and girls filled up on bread and Sprite.

 

Afterwards we took a carriage ride and waited for the bugler at the Astronomical Clock tower. People wait around for a glimpse of the bugler who emerges from a 4 story clock tower and plays a short tune every other hour. I wonder if that is a full time job? The next day we had great plans to rent a boat and have Chris row us along the Vlata river, but we forgot ID and were turned away. So we walked back into the main town and walked across the Charles Bridge and up to the Prague Castle for the changing of the guard. It was a long walk and a very hot day. The girls would have turned back in a heartbeat, but the promise of ice cream and a trdelnik rolled pastry kept them going. Trdelnik are delicious! They wrap dough around a 4 foot pole and cook over open flame. After it cooks they roll it in cinnamon sugar and nuts. Nummy! After our trek around the city we headed back to the airport.

Our time in Prague was too short and we hope to make it back to this beautiful city someday.
