Merry Christmas from Holland!

We had a wonderful time celebrating Christmas!  Here are some highlights:
  • Chris' town was granted a building permit this year, but the line was drawn when they asked to put in dikes and canals...
  • We went to the family service at our church and Allie and Tessa were quickly costumed as Magi for the pageant!  It was a great service; we really enjoy our new church.
  • Amsterdam had a Winter Boat Parade on the night of the 23rd with boats lit up with Christmas lights, carolers and some partying Santas!  The girls liked getting glowing ears the best...

  • The girls could hardly get to sleep on Christmas Eve and were bounding out of bed at 7am to see if Santa made it to Holland.  Once again, he found us.
  • It was neat to see how excited Allie and Tessa were to 'give' gifts this year.  Rather than begging for a gift to open themselves, they were begging to give the gifts they had for others.  Don't get me wrong, they liked opening gifts too.... I am reminded of a comment Allie made years ago after she had been asking for all sorts of gifts for Christmas.  Chris explained that Christmas is the season of giving.  Her response, "So what are you going to give me?"
  • We had a very relaxing day of opening gifts and playing games.  For dinner we were craving a Honey Baked Ham, but as you can probably guess they don't have those here... So I bought a ham at the market and we tried to recreate a Honey Baked Ham.  Hmmm...  Either a Dutch ham is not the same as a US ham or something was lost in translation at the butcher.  Maybe we'll do raw herring next year...
Christmas always brings to mind how our lives are richly blessed by God.  We feel so blessed to have an opportunity to 'be Dutch' for a few years. We hope you can get a glimpse of our lives over here.  Merry Christmas to all of you!
