We had a fun getaway to Brugges last weekend. It is a 3 hour drive from Amsterdam, so doable for a night. It was a tr
ading center in the 11th century and grew wealthy on the cloth trade. By the 15oo's it was one of the biggest cities in the world and an economic powerhouse. By the 1600's the harbor had silted up and the economy had collapsed. People fled and it became a dead city. By the 1800's a new port was built and brought renewed vitality and in the 1900's, tourists discovered the town. It is a clean, quaint, and picturesque town.
Belgium is know for Chocolate, Beer, Fries, and Waffles, and this is all we ate while we were there! (I'll be heading to the gym everyday this week!) One of the reasons that Belgian chocolate is so nummy is that the government requires that chocolate be made with 100% cacao butter and up to 70% cacao solids. There are over 2000 chocolate shops in Belgium, and I think half of those are in Brugges! They were everywhere, which was not a problem for the girls and me. We even saw a statue of President Obama made out of chocolate at the Chocolate Museum. The beer was fabulous as well; who ever knew that beer and chocolate went well together... Oh, and they are known for lace.

tayed at this wonderful B&B, Lestacion, just 5 min. outside of the city center. It is an old farm house in middle of cow and sheep pastures. Cecil was our gracious host, who served us a delicious breakfast. The girls loved starting the day with hot chocolate and I couldn't get enough of the homemade jelly. I highly recommend it; it is reasonably priced, clean, and such a tranquil setting. There is a 'family room' for 4ppl and a double room. There is also 
a separate cabin loft for 4 ppl, set away from the house that has a kitchenette in it, that would be great for a longer stay.
We walked the canal streets over and over, as we got lost and tried to figure where to go. The girls have become great travelers and know when not to ask, "Are we lost?" We have fully embraced being tourists and don't stray far without our 'Best of Europe' guidebook.
